Buff's house, still shining
"Buff and Hensman, through their long careers, moved beyond the Case Study model and expanded into an expressionist and compelling style. Their vocabulary was strong enough to bridge the gap between post-and-beam and later architectural styles."
"For fans of Southern California residential architecture, the name Buff & Hensman has an iconic ring. The partners designed two influential and inventive Case Study houses and a slew of celebrity houses for the likes of Steve McQueen, James Garner and Frank Sinatra."
Rapor, a residence perched atop a Pasadena hill with commanding views of the San Gabriel Mountains, represents the architectural vision of Conrad Buff III, co-founder of the influential firm Buff & Hensman. The firm gained prominence designing over 300 custom homes throughout Southern California, including two Case Study houses and residences for celebrities like Steve McQueen and Frank Sinatra. They won more than 40 AIA awards and designed Ronald Reagan's governor's mansion. While known for pioneering post-and-beam construction during the postwar housing boom, Buff & Hensman's style evolved significantly over their careers. Rapor exemplifies this evolution, showcasing an expressionist approach that transcended their earlier Case Study aesthetic, demonstrating the firm's architectural vocabulary's strength in bridging different design movements.
