The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a $5 increase in zoo ticket prices, effective July 1. This decision is part of efforts to address a $14-billion budget shortfall for the city. As a result, children will pay $22, adults $27, and seniors $24 for admission. The price rise reflects ongoing budget strains and follows previous increases in 2012. Zoo officials, particularly Director Denise Verret, expressed concerns that proposed staffing cuts could negatively impact visitor experience, highlighting the challenges faced by the facility.
The zoo is suffering from budget restraints, but the only way of raising revenue would be to raise prices. The L.A. Zoo is operated on a different level.
Mayor Karen Bass' proposed city budget sought the reduction of 53 positions at the zoo, about 19% of its workforce, which would harm the visitor experience.
