"President Alexander Lukashenko has been pushing for a law similar to Russia's for years, which has seen significant expansions in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation since 2013."
Belarus has approved a bill that criminalizes the promotion of homosexual relations, gender change, and other LGBTQ+ identities. Punishments include fines, community labor, and detention. Although homosexuality was decriminalized in 1994, the country lacks protections for LGBTQ+ rights. Security forces routinely target the community, conducting raids and blackmailing individuals. President Alexander Lukashenko has sought similar laws to Russia's, which has expanded its anti-LGBTQ+ legislation over the years. The Belarusian law is expected to be signed by Lukashenko soon.
