Budapest Pride goes ahead despite police ban DW 06/28/2025
Briefly

Tens of thousands of supporters participated in the Budapest Pride march, despite a police ban amid threats from Prime Minister Viktor Orban. An estimated 180,000 to 200,000 attendees, according to Pride president Viktoria Radvanyi, marked a historic turnout. Orban's administration has restricted LGBTQ+ rights, including a recent law allowing the prohibition of Pride marches. However, Madrid Mayor Gergely Karacsony designated the event a municipal one, challenging the police ban. European officials voiced support for the march, reinforcing principles of equality and non-discrimination amid an atmosphere of repression in Hungary.
"This is about much more, not just about homosexuality,...This is the last moment to stand up for our rights," Eszter Rein Bodi, one of the marchers, told the Reuters news agency.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called on Hungarian authorities not to block the march. "Our Union is one of equality and non-discrimination," von der Leyen wrote in a statement.
