""This bill is a direct attack on LGBTQ visibility and a textbook example of government overreach and censorship," said the Senior Political Director of Equality Florida, Joe Saunders, in a statement. "The Pride flag is a symbol of safety, inclusion, and community for millions of Floridians. [...] These bills prevent local cities and counties from using flags to recognize their own communities or make them welcoming to residents and tourists.""
""Floridians deserve leaders focused on solving real problems, not weaponizing government to erase LGBTQ people from public life," Saunders added. "We've defeated this bill before, and we will defeat it again.""
Florida lawmakers pre-filed identical bills for the 2026 session to ban Pride flags from government buildings and schools, renewing a multi-year effort. The bills were submitted as H.B. 347 (Rep. David Borrero) and S.B. 426 (Sen. Clay Yarborough). The proposed language would bar displays of flags described as representing political partisanship or similar categories and would restrict local governments from flying Pride flags. Past versions failed before floor votes. Equality Florida and other advocates characterize the measures as censorship and government overreach. A June 14 Sarasota rally drew about 7,000 people, featuring a 700-foot Pride flag and a Ringling Bridge parade.
