Florida Department of Transportation demanded that Delray Beach remove a Pride-themed crossing by September 3 and warned it would remove the crossing by any appropriate method and bill the city. The state letter threatened to withhold state funds if the city did not comply. Delray Beach had voted to keep the Pride crosswalk after a passionate speech from Vice Mayor Rob Long. City Manager Terrance Moore said the city must bring the intersection into compliance with public safety standards and that work to do so is expected to begin in the coming days. Vice Mayor Long described the action as political and aimed at erasing LGBTQ+ visibility.
the Florida Department of Transportation will remove them by any appropriate method necessary without further notice.
Let's be honest. We all know this is not about traffic safety. This is political. "It's part of the same culture war climate where symbols of inclusion are targeted precisely because they represent acceptance. It's about erasing the visibility of our LGBTQ+ people at the same time when their rights are again under direct threat."
Like several other communities across Florida, the city of Delray Beach is required to bring the pride intersection into compliance with public safety standard. This work is expected to begin in the coming days.
