Gayle King said public speculation about her relationship with Oprah Winfrey used to bother her. She recalled telling Winfrey that rumors made it harder for her to date and that Winfrey should address them on her show. King said Winfrey advised her to ignore the rumors, and King responded that the advice was easier for Winfrey because she had a partner. King and Winfrey became friends in 1976 and have discussed the rumors publicly before. King said social media accelerates hate, and she now feels secure enough to stop caring. She stated that if they were gay they would say so, and she prefers a man.
"“I would say to her, 'You've got to say something on your show, because it's hard enough for me to get a date on a Saturday night and now people think I'm a lesbian, you've gotta say something,'” King said."
"“While Winfrey told King to just ignore the rumors, King recalled, 'I said, 'Well, that's fine for you to say. You have somebody. I don't.'” King and Winfrey became friends in 1976 when they both worked at WJZ-TV in Baltimore, Maryland."
"“When you go on social media, it is an accelerator on hate. As long as I feel good about what I'm doing, the people I respect and trust are okay with it. Otherwise, you'll drive yourself nuts. So now I really don't care... I've now gotten to the point in my life that very few things get to me.”"
"“If we were gay, we would tell you because believe me, there's nothing wrong with it,” King noted, stating that the rumors began after her 1993 divorce and hit their peak in the late '90s and mid-2000s. “It's just, I prefer a man. So we would tell you."
