Hampstead Heath bosses 'carefully considering' court ruling over women's pond
Briefly

The UK Supreme Court recently ruled that the definition of 'woman' within the Equality Act 2010 excludes transgender women with gender recognition certificates. This ruling allows for the potential exclusion of these women from single-sex areas like changing rooms and hospitals if deemed proportionate. One affected area is the historic Kenwood Ladies Pond, which has allowed transgender women access since 2010. Following the ruling, discussions around safety and inclusivity continue, with local organizations considering their responses and policies moving forward.
Individuals will have their own views about the Supreme Court ruling. The Ladies' Pond is open to all women and girls over the age of eight and, according to the lifeguards, trans women have been swimming there for many years without incident.
Following the Supreme Court ruling, a CoLC spokesperson said: We are carefully considering the judgement. We remain committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all.
