Hampstead Heath ponds consult on trans inclusivity
"The consultation, which looks at six ways of operating the pools and their facilities, examines who should be able to access the Kenwood Ladies' and Highgate Men's ponds. Currently, trans men and trans women are entitled to use the pond of their choice - a mixed pond is also available. One possible way forward includes ditching the sex division completely."
"A third option proposes that the ponds should be trans-inclusive spaces based on how people have decided to live their lives. Under this option the men's pond would be accessible to people who have decided to live their lives as men (including trans men but excluding trans women) and the ladies' pond to people who have decided to live their lives as women (including trans women but excluding trans men)."
The City of London Corporation launched a consultation on whether Hampstead Heath ponds should remain trans-inclusive, presenting six operational options for pool access and facilities. Trans men and trans women currently may use the pond matching their identity, and a mixed pond is available. Options include retaining trans-inclusive access, abolishing sex divisions entirely, operating ponds as strictly single-sex based on biological sex, or admitting based on how people live their lives. Another option makes ponds trans-inclusive while restricting communal toilets and changing rooms by sex, and a hybrid model combines time-based inclusivity with strictly single-sex operation. The consultation was prompted by an April Supreme Court ruling and the need to comply with the Equality Act 2010.
