How LGBTQ+ people are defending Earth in the climate crisis
"Environmentalism has always been something that is super important to me because I didn't necessarily always see myself in the people that I was surrounded by,"
"I grew up in a really conservative town, where if you wanted to insult someone, you would call them gay. The natural world has never been discriminatory to me like that."
"If I get caught out in a storm, that's my bad. But I can absorb all of nature and all of the beauties without it caring about what my sexuality is, what my gender is,"
"I always have a place outside."
Shannon "SJ" Joslin is nonbinary and gay and finds comfort in nature when humans cannot or will not provide it. They are a former park ranger who participated in hanging a large transgender Pride flag in Yosemite National Park and were subsequently fired from their ranger position. The action led to international attention and recognition in the Out100. Joslin is contesting the termination while searching for roles in environmental education and processing the experience. They emphasize environmentalism and science as inclusive spaces and aspire to guide others using climbing skills and ecological knowledge.
