Hungarian lawmakers are set to vote on amendments proposed by the ruling Fidesz party that aim to limit the rights of the LGBTQ community. These changes include a legal ban on Pride events and defining gender strictly as male or female. The amendments are part of a broader campaign against what the government labels as 'woke ideology,' claiming that protecting children from such expressions is paramount. Widespread protests have arisen in response to these changes, but the ruling party's majority is expected to ensure their passage.
Monday's amendments would underpin legislation passed on March 18 that banned the annual Pride march in the country, which effectively restricted freedom of assembly.
Orban said in March as he defended the move, "We won't let woke ideology endanger our kids."
The amendments are also to codify "children's rights" for their "proper physical, mental and moral development take precedence over all other fundamental rights, except the right to life."
Orban added in response to public protest over the amendments, "Normal people like us are under constant provocation, because people who live according to non-traditional sexual behavior.... let off steam on the streets."
