"I thought I'd had a lovely time and everyone was welcoming and supportive,"
"A woman from human resources at reception who told her "senior management" felt she didn't "share their same family values"."
"I worked very hard in that job and I was very good at my job. I won an award but that didn't protect me against discrimination or homophobia."
Lou Beardsmore lost her job after taking her partner to a Christmas work party at an Edinburgh-based investment company where she had worked for nearly two years. She was out to only a few colleagues. The morning after the party a human resources representative informed her that senior management believed she did not share their ‘‘family values’’ and placed her on three months' gardening leave. No colleagues reached out following the dismissal. Nearly 40% of LGBTQ+ people in the UK remain closeted at work due to fear of discrimination. Lou later co-founded Proud Futures to provide LGBTQ+ leadership training and wellbeing programmes and helped organise Scotland's first LGBTQ+ leadership conference, Leading with Pride.
