Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday, is remembered as a transformative leader by LGBTQ+ activists and advocates for his inclusivity efforts within the Church. GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis reflected on his commitment to making a Church for everyone and noted his strong stance against the criminalization of LGBTQ+ individuals. Over his papacy, he welcomed LGBTQ+ people in various discussions, allowing for blessings of same-sex couples under specific conditions and recognizing transgender individuals' rights within the Church, while still maintaining traditional Catholic teachings on sexuality.
Having had the honor of meeting with Pope Francis twice, I witnessed first-hand his dedication to make a Church for all, not just some.
When Pope Francis spoke out against the act of criminalizing LGBTQ people, he created an example of unity that faith and civil leaders should follow.
