
A fertilized egg abandoned by a hen was rescued by Kassidy Watson-Perry and her grandmother near the Perquimans River in North Carolina. A DIY incubator was used, and a rooster hatched on October 11, 2019. The rooster was first considered for the name “Cluck Norris” before being named Nelson. Nelson sleeps in the laundry room and receives a well-balanced breakfast, daily snacks, and weekly coconut oil massages on his comb and wattles. He follows Watson-Perry wherever she goes. Watson-Perry views Nelson as more than a typical chicken and credits his human-raised upbringing and distinctive demeanor. Nelson’s presence is described as helping her embrace her queer identity in a community with limited progressive ideals.
