Texas Republicans recently passed Senate Bill 12, intended to ban public schools from supporting LGBTQ+ clubs such as Gay Straight Alliances. The legislation, likely to be signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott, asserts parents' rights over their children's moral upbringing and targets diversity initiatives in schools. Democratic lawmakers criticized the bill, warning it could harm LGBTQ+ youth, with Representative Gene Wu condemning the bill's implications for acceptance and identity among students. Democrats argue that the legislation fosters fear and silence rather than support for LGBTQ+ students.
A school district or open-enrolment charter school may not authorise or sponsor a student club based on sexual orientation or gender identity, according to the bill.
Getting silence in schools from the LGBTQ community, which is what this bill is designed to do, will not stop your kid being gay. It will just make them afraid to come out.
