Derek Kitchen is a former Utah state senator, Salt Lake City council member, marriage equality activist, and Biden administration official who has entered the Democratic primary for the newly drawn First Congressional District covering Salt Lake City and nearby suburbs. The district is the most Democratic-leaning area in Utah, with Kamala Harris winning it comfortably in 2024. Kitchen grew up and attended school inside the new district and owns Laziz Kitchen on Harvey Milk Boulevard. Kitchen frames his campaign around local representation and serving LGBTQ people, young voters, public servants, and labor groups.
