The remake of Ang Lee's 1993 film, The Wedding Banquet, directed by Andrew Ahn, celebrates LGBTQ acceptance with humor and heartfelt emotion. Ahn explores the relevance of lavender marriages today in the context of ongoing challenges to marriage equality. The story focuses on gay couple Chris and Min, alongside lesbian couple Angela and Lee, navigating societal pressures and personal challenges through a manufactured marriage. Ahn's vision honors the original while delivering a bold message about family and acceptance across cultural lines.
I wanted to make a film that really celebrated family. This film reminds us of why queer stories matter-to show families thriving wherever people can find acceptance.
Ahn's answer was a resounding yes. Even now, as various states roll back marriage equality, we can collectively imagine situations where such marriages of convenience might be advantageous.
