Though the US is backsliding on LGBTQ+ rights under Trump, the UN renews mandate for queer protections expert
Briefly

The UN Human Rights Council has renewed the mandate for an LGBTQ+ rights expert, ensuring nation-states are obligated to protect the rights of individuals regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Graeme Reid, appointed for a three-year term, expressed gratitude for the support of numerous civil society organizations. The renewal was backed by a coalition of supportive countries and is accompanied by extensive efforts, including reports and official visits, to address discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ populations globally. The mandate emphasizes the requirement to protect LGBTQ+ persons as a fundamental human rights issue.
As the Independent Expert on Protection against violence and discrimination against LGBTQ+ people, Graeme Reid stated, “I am deeply grateful for the overwhelming support of 1,259 civil society organisations from 157 countries.” He emphasized that the Human Rights Council’s vote affirms the necessity of protecting LGBTQ+ persons as a human rights obligation.
Reid also asserted, “This vote is not just a decision-it's a message of hope,” highlighting the significance of international support for LGBTQ+ rights amid challenges.
Since the mandate's inception in 2016, the UN has conducted 11 official visits and issued 17 reports on discrimination, focusing on the impact of criminalization and lack of legal recognition worldwide.
The renewed mandate reflects a global consensus, as shown by support from a core group of countries like Brazil and Uruguay, and sponsorship from 50 nations across all regions.
