A 24-year-old man was arrested after being observed removing copper cable from Caltrain tracks in South San Francisco during the early morning of Jan. 11. Deputies and volunteer pilots operating the Sheriff's Office airplane were monitoring Caltrain tracks when they saw the suspect actively removing cable. Deputies recovered approximately 50 feet of cable and estimated the theft caused about $5,000 in damage. The arrest involved collaboration with the South San Francisco Police Department. The suspect was booked into Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City and was charged with multiple counts including grand theft, receiving stolen property, conspiracy, tampering with a railroad, and trespass.
