Damon Silver was appointed permanent chief public defender by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors after serving a year as interim head. He has worked in the office for three decades in roles from line-level attorney to chief trial deputy and top executive under predecessor Molly O'Neal, who retired and endorsed him. Silver emphasized preserving continuity to maximize the office's mission to assist vulnerable and indigent people disproportionately affected by the criminal court system and stressed a long client-centered tradition.
