Former Alabama football player wore wigs and makeup to impersonate NFL players in $20 million fraud, prosecutors say | Fortune
"Luther Davis had convinced investors the money was for a player in the NFL, and he used the wig and makeup to impersonate the athlete. The ruse worked."
"The scheme brought in nearly $20 million from at least 13 fraudulent loans that Davis and Evins used to buy real estate, jewelry, and cars."
"Prosecutors say Davis used fake driver's licenses with photos of the players that could be found online, further aiding his impersonation efforts."
Luther Davis, a former University of Alabama defensive tackle, impersonated NFL players to secure nearly $20 million in fraudulent loans. He used disguises, including wigs and do-rags, during video calls to convince investors. Davis and his accomplice, CJ Evins, face charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. The loans were unauthorized by the players and were used to purchase real estate, jewelry, and cars. Both men pleaded not guilty but are scheduled to enter guilty pleas in court.
