"In her victim impact statement, the young woman said that she still suffers from flashbacks arising out of what occurred to her at such a young age. "My heart hurts because of what happened to me. I could not stop wetting myself when I started school. My Mum had to bring in a change of clothes for me to have in school. I had to change my clothes all the time. I was about 13 years old when I stopped wetting the bed," she said."
A 34-year-old man appeared at the Central Criminal Court sitting in Cork and pleaded guilty to ten counts of sexually assaulting the older child and one count relating to her younger sister. The defendant was aged between 21 and 26 when the abuses occurred in the family home. Prosecutor Jane Hyland SC said the case included descriptions of rape though no corresponding charge or admission was made, and the proceedings ran on a full facts basis. A victim impact statement from the older girl describes flashbacks, prolonged bedwetting until about 13, self-harm, difficulty making eye contact, and fear of quiet and going out alone.
