Mohsen Mahdawi highlights Columbia University's approach to antisemitism, revealing how the Office of Institutional Equity is examining his expressions of Catholic faith under the pretense of preventing discriminatory harassment. Despite assurances that the investigation is not disciplinary, Mahdawi shares his experience of being scrutinized for his social media posts and public statements, which align with his religious beliefs. He expresses concern over the implications of this oversight, questioning the extent to which personal beliefs can be expressed freely within an educational institution.
In a meeting this month with three OIE officials - who identified themselves as 'investigators' - I was informed that I had been the subject of 'multiple complaints.' They insisted that their goal wasn't to discipline me but to 'make sure this doesn't escalate into a disciplinary outcome.' Over the course of our conversation, OIE treated my public Catholic beliefs as if they were prohibited, which I found quite alarming.
One post read: 'God does not teach us that we can change our gender.' I had nothing to regret. I believe in the right to express my Catholic beliefs openly, including my opposition to certain gender ideologies and supporting legislative actions.
