On May 1, 2025, a major rally was held in Los Angeles as part of nationwide protests against corporate power, featuring over 55,000 members of SEIU Local 721. These protests highlighted a systemic attack on workers' rights under the current governmental landscape, including threats against agencies like the NLRB and EPA. The rally addressed broader social issues like austerity and climate destruction, emphasizing the need for systemic change, rather than relying solely on protests, to protect workers and the environment. The historical context shows that these agencies, initially created to shield workers, are now under siege by powerful capitalist interests.
Protests like these are important, but will have little impact on their own. Stopping the billionaires will require much more.
From a historical perspective, what's surprising isn't so much the current blitzkrieg as the fact that agencies that help protect people were tolerated for so long.
Regulatory agencies ultimately stabilize capitalism, but they are usually met with either hostility or grudging support from capital.
The history of the NLRB is a stark example. Created in 1935, the board furnished a legal framework for unionization and collective bargaining.
