John Heitinga, Liverpool's assistant manager, has departed to take over as Ajax's head coach for the 2025-26 season. A former player for Ajax, Heitinga has a rich history with the club, having won two Eredivisie titles during his playing career. Following an interim spell as head coach at Ajax, he gained Premier League experience with West Ham before joining Liverpool. His signing comes after Ajax's disappointing finish to the past season, where they missed out on the title despite being in a strong position before the end. Ajax's technical director expressed confidence in Heitinga's abilities and knowledge of the club.
Ajax were nine points clear at the top of the Eredivisie with seven games remaining, but ultimately finished a point behind eventual winners PSV.
John knows the club well and we are convinced that he, together with [assistant] Marcel Keizer, will help improve our players and build on the progress made since last summer.
