Three players to watch when Liverpool plays Newcastle United
Briefly

Alexander Isak has frozen himself out of the Newcastle setup and will not play as the club has yet to sell him. Liverpool, as Premier League champions, face one of their most difficult away trips of the season. Hugo Ekitike scored his second goal in two games and assisted Cody Gakpo in a 4-2 win, showcasing the skills that prompted Liverpool to sign him and giving him a chance to prove himself against top opposition. Ekitike was linked with Newcastle earlier in the window. Anthony Gordon seeks to rebound from a subpar 2024/25 campaign, is motivated to be Newcastle’s main attacking figure without Isak, will likely start with Harvey Barnes and Anthony Elanga, and has scored twice against Liverpool at St James' Park.
Perhaps an obvious choice, Hugo Ekitike was the name on everyone's lips for at least the first hour or so at Anfield last Friday night. The Frenchman showed some of the skills that made Liverpool want to acquire his services in the first place. He scored his second goal in two games, and assisted for Cody Gakpo as Liverpool won 4-2.
Ekitike was linked with Newcastle United earlier in the transfer window, as the Magpies eyed a potential replacement for Isak, before the Reds swooped for the Frenchman. In some ways, Ekitike still has a point to prove, that he can score and assist against higher Premier League opposition. The 23-year-old will see this as an opportunity to make Newcastle rue their inability to get their deal done.
Almost a forgotten man this summer, Anthony Gordon was the talk of the town last off-season, as rumours swirled of his potential interest in signing for Liverpool. Boyhood red Gordon always plays as though he has a point to prove against Liverpool. After a subpar campaign in 2024/25 Gordon will have more than enough motivation, as he will want to show that he can be the main man in a Newcastle attack without Isak.
