Widespread sadness after death of Donegal and Mayo hotel owner
Tony McDermott, owner of the Mill Park Hotel in Donegal Town and The Kiltimagh Park Hotel in Co Mayo, died and prompted widespread sadness. He was widely known and respected in the hospitality industry. Staff at the Mill Park Hotel paid tribute to his dedication to both properties, describing his hands-on presence alongside every department and his refusal to ask others to do what he would not do himself. They said he was meticulous, taking pride in everything from grounds to bedroom details. They described him as treating staff like family and creating a close-knit, supportive workplace. Even during illness, he remained determined, shared stories, and inspired others. He was especially valued for welcoming guests with warmth and kindness and for building lasting relationships with suppliers, tradespeople, and local businesses.
"He was our boss, and our dear friend. “As owner, he was always present, working side by side with every department and never asking of anyone what he wouldn't do himself. “He was meticulous in everything he did. “From the grounds outside to every detail in the bedrooms, nothing ever escaped his eye. He took such pride in making sure everything was perfect.”"
"The staff said Mr McDermott treated every member of staff like part of his own family, and because of him, both hotels became such close-knit, supportive places to work. “He created an environment where everyone looked out for one another, and that sense of togetherness is something we will carry with us always. “Even throughout his illness, Tony never gave up. “His strength and determination were an inspiration to us all.”"
"“He always had a story to share whenever you stopped to chat with him, whether it was a bit of advice, a memory, or simply something to make you smile. “Those conversations are moments we will all treasure.”"
"The tribute said what Mr McDermott loved most was welcoming guests to the hotels. “So many people were greeted by his warmth and his kindness. “The same warmth extended to the many suppliers, tradesmen, and local businesses; all of whom he valued and built lasting relationships with over the years. “Tony didn't just manage the hotels, he created a family.”"
