""particularly proud to bring double-decker trains to the UK for the very first time""
""exceptional comfort""
Eurostar has ordered 30 Alstom Celestia double-decker trains with an option for 20 more in a €2bn (£1.74bn) deal, potentially increasing the fleet by nearly a third. Each train will be 200m long and two coupled units would form a 400m service with about 1,080 seats. The new trains will be the first double-decker high-speed trains through the Channel Tunnel; the only prior UK double-decker experiment began in 1949. The fleet renewal supports a target to grow annual passengers from 19.5 million to 30 million and will raise London services by 30%. Eurostar will invest £80m to develop Temple Mills depot, the only UK depot able to accommodate continental-sized trains and currently used exclusively by Eurostar, with questions remaining about space for potential rival operators.
