Firefighters tackle blaze at New Cross flats for 14 hours
Briefly

About 100 firefighters and 15 fire engines fought a fire at a block of flats on Hatcham Park Mews in New Cross, south-east London, for more than 14 hours. Two 32-metre turntable ladders were used as water towers to tackle flames from height. Local residents were evacuated to a rest centre and a hotel while crews worked to control the blaze. The building's roof was destroyed and parts of the first and second floors were damaged. The Brigade took 12 calls from 16:27 and mobilised crews from multiple stations. The fire was under control by 06:48, with crews expected to remain on scene into the morning, and the incident caused a large smoke plume and significant traffic disruption.
Crews worked hard in challenging conditions to bring the fire under control and are expected to be on scene throughout the morning.
The fire generated a large plume of smoke, particularly around the junction of New Cross Road and Queens Road. We asked people who live or work nearby, to keep windows and doors closed.
The incident also caused significant traffic disruption, so we asked people to avoid the area where possible.
