Lewisham asks public for ideas to rescue and reopen the Ladywell Playtower
"Lewisham Council is seeking suggestions on how to restore the decaying Ladywell Playtower in south London and reopen it to the public. As one of Lewisham's most significant Grade II listed sites, the Ladywell Playtower opened in 1884 as a swimming pool and public hall, and despite closing in 2004, the Grade II listed building remains a feature of the neighbourhood."
"However, those plans fell through, and last year the council cancelled the project and said it would issue fresh tenders to developers later this year to propose a way to save the building. The council says any future proposals must be "financially viable and shaped by local priorities" The council has now launched a consultation as it seeks a long-term partner to help bring Ladywell Playtower back to life."
Ladywell Playtower is a Grade II listed building in south London that opened in 1884 as a swimming pool and public hall and closed in 2004. The building was damaged by fire in 2006. A 2022 development plan to build new houses around the tower and convert the swimming pool building into a cinema was abandoned. The council cancelled that project and intends to issue fresh tenders to developers. Any future proposals must be financially viable and shaped by local priorities. A public consultation has been launched to find a long-term partner and gather community views, with a preferred developer expected to be named in late 2026.
