"Sir Mark said a blitz had seen a reverse the rise in store thefts, with cases down 4.4 per cent this year from April to this month, equivalent to 3,000 fewer victims. Britain's most senior policeman added shop owners were justified in criticising forces two years ago for failing to do enough. They were right to say to us, please step up more,' he said."
Retail theft in London increased 12.4% year-on-year, reaching 99,363 recorded shoplifting offences in the 12 months to December and imposing roughly £16.7 million in losses each month. Staff who intervene face racist and sexist slurs, threats and violence, contributing to demoralisation among retail workers. A recent enforcement blitz coincided with a 4.4% fall in store thefts from April to this month, equal to about 3,000 fewer victims. Many incidents go unreported, with industry experts estimating nine in ten offences are not reported. Highest offence counts occur in Westminster, Newham and Camden while several outer boroughs report substantially lower totals.
