Waterloo woe: 1bn fleet of platform hoover' trains to be rolled out to help tackle extreme overcrowding'
Briefly

A fleet of new trains called platform hoovers is set to be rolled out to alleviate extreme overcrowding on routes to London Waterloo, following delays since 2019. Currently, only four of the planned 90 services are operational. As trains approach London, overcrowding significantly increases, especially at stations like Wandsworth Town. The delays in rollout stem from insufficient driver training and the need for drivers to operate existing services. SWR is hiring a new Arterio Programme Director to expedite the rollout process, which is reportedly long overdue.
The rollout of the new trains, known as platform hoovers, has been really, really slow with just four of the 90 trains currently in operation.
Extreme overcrowding on the train services to London Waterloo has been a significant issue, particularly as trains near closer to London.
Putney MP Fleur Anderson raised concerns about overcrowding, with many passengers unable to get on trains during peak times, particularly at Wandsworth Town.
SWR, having been renationalised by the Labour Government, is now faced with the challenge of implementing the long-delayed rollout of the new train fleet.
