'Breathtaking' theatre restored and ready to reopen 50 years after last performance
Briefly

The Soho Theatre Walthamstow is reopening on May 9 after a major restoration. This historic venue was first opened in 1897 and became the Granada theatre in 1930, famously hosting acts like The Beatles and Rolling Stones before becoming a cinema in 1973. After years of dereliction, local campaigns led to its restoration as a theater in partnership with Waltham Forest Council. Mark Godfrey of Soho Theatre noted the community's passion in preserving the building's legacy and creating a national-profile local theater.
Mark Godfrey, co-executive director of Soho Theatre, expressed that the venue was saved due to a passionate grassroots campaign, stating, "This place is breathtaking and for it to be back in use, it is such a special moment for everyone."
Jess Draper, head of creative engagement at Soho Theatre, reflected on the importance of the venue, saying, "So many people have memories of this place—there's something really exciting about being part of such a rich heritage."
