The Mercury celebrates its 25th anniversary with a birthday bash scheduled for July 31 at Polaris Hall featuring performances from Pure Bathing Culture, Nonbinary Girlfriend, and Karma Rivera. The event sold out quickly, but an afterparty hosted by Dream House will follow. Additionally, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley will perform, showcasing his influential highlife music style that harmonizes various genres like funk and reggae. Roman Norfleet & Be Present Art Group will also be featured.
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has been doing it since the early '70s, incorporating this wild vocal inflection that can only be described as a purr, but with an 'h' instead of a 'p.'
Highlife is an expansive music style first taking shape in the late 19th century that has continued evolving to this very day, embracing funk, disco, calypso, and reggae.
