Royal Mail has launched a set of 10 commemorative stamps to mark the 350th anniversary of the Royal Observatory's establishment in 1675. Six stamps feature key historical instruments including the Airy Transit Circle and the Great Equatorial Telescope, which is the UK’s largest refracting telescope. Additionally, four more stamps honor clockmaker John Harrison and his innovative marine timekeepers, showcasing his prototypes for measuring longitude. The stamps commemorate the Observatory's significant impact on timekeeping and navigation throughout its history, as highlighted by Royal Mail's officials.
We are proud to honour the Royal Observatory's 350th anniversary with a set of stamps that celebrate its enduring legacy in advancing our understanding of the universe and its pivotal role in shaping modern science and navigation.
We are delighted to have partnered with Royal Mail to celebrate six key moments in the 350-year history of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich and the groundbreaking timekeepers by John Harrison, which still call the Royal Observatory home.
