Walham Green tube station, originally named after the local area, opened on March 1, 1880. It was part of the District line's expansion from West Brompton to Putney Bridge. Over time, the commercial focus of Fulham shifted to Walham Green, and the area transformed notably, with Fulham Road renamed Fulham Broadway. In 1951, after local pressure for recognition of Fulham, the station's name changed from Walham Green to Fulham Broadway, despite initial resistance due to financial concerns.
Walham Green tube station on the District line has regained its historic station sign, more than 70 years after it was removed. The station opened on 1st March 1880 as part of the District line's extension from West Brompton to Putney Bridge.
The area's ancient name is suggested to be a corruption of the Norse god Woden, although it's not entirely proven. The arrival of the railway station saw the commercial centre of Fulham move away from the riverside to Walham Green.
