Balconies 'doomed from the start' on 41m estate
Briefly

A BBC investigation uncovered severe safety issues with balconies in the Weavers Quarter estate in Barking, built by Bouygues UK. Originally touted as safe, experts found these balconies were inherently flawed and posed a risk of collapse from their design phase. Residents have endured ongoing safety concerns since a partial collapse occurred, leading to urgent safety measures and scaffolding around affected properties—a situation that has left many unable to safely utilize their balconies for over a year despite previous assurances from the construction company.
Experts who reviewed original plans obtained by the BBC now say the balconies were fatally flawed and prone to collapse from the start, even if built to specification.
