Bethnal Green pub withdraws plan to open later after residents raise concerns
Briefly

The Sun Tavern on Bethnal Green Road sought to extend its opening hours to 1am on Wednesdays and Sundays, but local residents voiced concerns over noise, disorderly behaviour, and rubbish. Maddy, a resident, highlighted that expensive cocktails could lead to unruly behaviour just like cheap beers. Mr Newman mentioned he tolerates existing noise but drew a line at further extensions. Following objections, applicant Andrew Kerr agreed to withdraw the application for further community consultation. The council confirmed this withdrawal means future applications would need to start anew.
Even if they are drinking more expensive cocktails, that's just as able to get them drunk and unruly and shouting and vomiting on my doorstep as a cheap beer.
I'd be totally supportive...I'm so pleased that I'm the person who's living here because I can tolerate the noise that's already there and I don't want to raise complaints about it. But also, I think I'm happy to say that this is kind of where the line should be.
Councillor Ahmodur Khan asked the objectors about their specific concerns regarding the extended hours. After hearing these objections, the applicant offered to withdraw the application to allow for further consultation with residents.
Residents expressed a preference for an adjournment rather than a withdrawal, but the applicant proceeded with the withdrawal.
