A book exchange scheme at London Underground stations is being reinstated after safety concerns led to its suspension. Transport for London (TfL) plans to reintroduce the program at 15 surface-level Tube stations, having established a fire-proof storage solution. The initial halt, prompted by the London Fire Brigade's safety warnings, sparked criticism from former officials. New cabinets designed to meet fire safety regulations are to be introduced, ensuring that the tradition of sharing books can resume safely within the community.
Prior to the suspension, 31 stations had the book swap scheme including at Oval and Lewisham.
Andy Roe said while they 'celebrate the tradition of Londoners sharing books', it must be 'managed safely'.
