British rapper Ghetts jailed for 12 years for causing death of student in hit and run

"My son had come for studies to this place but, because of somebody's mistakes, he has died at a very small age. Yubin was our only child. My son had come for his studies to the UK saying the UK had the best degree in the world. But on his way back from his work this happened and he lost his life."

"CCTV footage showed a quite appalling litany of incidents leading up to the fatal collision, which he described as simply shocking. The prosecutor, Philip McGhee, said Clarke-Samuel had been drinking alcohol at Omi Lounge in Wells Street in central London on the evening of Saturday 18 October 2025. He was said to be one-and-a-half times over the legal drink-drive limit and was driving at speeds of more than 70mph before the crash."

"Yubin was only 20 years old. He had dreams, ambition, plans for his future. He said the incident had not only led to the loss of a life full of promise, it had also permanently affected the lives of others."

Grime artist Ghetts, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for causing the death of Yubin Tamang, a 20-year-old Nepalese student, in a hit-and-run incident in north-east London. Clarke-Samuel was driving his BMW at 67mph in a 30mph zone while one-and-a-half times over the legal drink-drive limit. CCTV footage revealed he failed to stop at six red traffic lights, repeatedly veered onto the wrong side of the road, and collided with other vehicles before hitting Tamang as he crossed the street. He admitted to dangerous driving and causing death by dangerous driving. The judge also disqualified him from driving for 17 years. Tamang's family expressed their devastation, noting he had come to the UK to pursue his education.
