A planning committee meeting on April 22 saw around 40 residents objecting to a proposal for building 19 flats and a house next to a railway in Bowes Park. The committee agreed with residents' concerns about overcrowding and loss of privacy. Labour Cllr Mahym Bedekova and Conservative Cllr Michael Rye voiced opposition, citing inadequate parking measures and the impact on local traffic. Although the area's public transport was highlighted, it was deemed insufficient to mitigate parking stress. The proposal's rejection reflects community priorities regarding residential density and local infrastructure.
Labour committee chair Cllr Mahym Bedekova stated the plan was too close to neighbouring homes and would become too overcrowded. Conservative committee member Cllr Michael Rye agreed. He said: It's overdevelopment for the site, the car-free element cannot be justified given that there's no controlled parking zone (CPZ) in place. This will add parking stress, which is already an issue on the road.
Karen Page, the council's head of planning, said it did not and added that the area was well served by public transport. ... the benefits the scheme brings in terms of more housing.
