Cork seaside town set for 'long-awaited' new 1.5 million shower and toilet block
A €1.5m Fáilte Ireland-funded facility centre is planned for Claycastle beach in Youghal, East Cork. The 58-square-metre low-rise building will include five indoor showers, four outdoor showers, wash-down facilities, and four toilet cubicles, along with wash-hand basins, storage, and equipment space. The building will be constructed within an existing council-owned public car park, so no works are planned for the beach, dunes, or inter-tidal zone. Fáilte Ireland plans to provide all-weather visitor facilities at water sports locations using a standardised design. Cork County Council will deliver the facility as a Part 8 development, with work starting this year and completion expected for next season.
"The 58-square-metre, low-rise building will provide five indoor showers, four outdoor showers, wash-down facilities and four toilet cubicles as well as wash-hand basins and storage and equipment space. No works to the beach, dunes or inter-tidal zone will be required as the building will be built within an existing council-owned public car park."
"Fáilte Ireland is planning to deliver a range of all-weather activity visitor facilities at water sports locations around the country using a standardised design. "With a well-established destination for water sports and infrastructure in place, Claycastle fits the criteria for the grant of a beachside activity visitor facility funded by Fáilte Ireland," the tourist body said."
"Speaking at a meeting of Cork County Council this week, County Mayor and Youghal Councillor Mary Linehan-Foley welcomed the development. "This is long awaited in East Cork, in my own hometown of Youghal. We're years waiting for this. We've been fighting for this at our municipal district level and at Cork County Council level for a number of years. I want to thank Fáilte Ireland, Cork County Council and everyone involved in this," she said."
"The facility, which will be delivered by Cork County Council as a Part 8 development, was formally proposed by Cllr Linehan-Foley and seconded by Cllr Michael Hegarty. Work will begin on site this year and be completed in time for next year's season."
