Council considers ban on garden bonfires
Briefly

Hammersmith and Fulham Council is evaluating a new byelaw to prohibit bonfires in gardens to improve air quality and reduce particulate pollution. This initiative comes in light of 2023 statistics showing that deaths from air pollution in the borough exceeded the national average. While the proposed byelaw targets outdoor burning of household waste, it will exempt barbecues and indoor burning. It must undergo public consultation and approval from the Secretary of State, along with studies on health impacts and pollution analysis before implementation.
"Outdoor fires and wood burning create harmful particulate matter emissions, for which it is considered there is no safe level," a report by the council said. "Short term exposure to high particulate matter emissions can cause asthma episodes and play a part in a multitude of other longer-term effects."
The council must carry out studies of the borough's domestic wood burning emissions and an analysis on the impacts of outdoor fires on public health.
