Council tax rise to help police fight phone thefts
"taking the difficult decision to increase council tax to provide crucial funding for the police."
"This will help to implement a major crackdown on phone theft with more resources to smash the phone gangs,"
"taken action on mobile phone gangs sooner"
Plans propose increasing council tax by more than £20 a year on the average Band D bill, raising the City Hall share above £500 for the first time. Fifteen pence of the increase would raise an additional £60m for police to tackle phone theft and improve neighbourhood policing, while five pence would fund the London Fire Brigade. The Met recorded 117,211 phones stolen in 2024, up 25% from 91,481 in 2019, with only 1% of cases leading to charges or convictions. If approved, the change would enable record policing investment of £1.22bn next year. Conservative Assembly members criticized the timing of action on mobile phone gangs.
