Elizabeth line testing airport-style barriers at Paddington station
Briefly

Transport for London (TfL) has introduced airport-style luggage barriers at Paddington station to address the high number of escalator accidents linked to heavy bags. Despite having two lifts, many passengers instinctively choose the escalators, leading to congestion and safety risks. With Paddington being a busy interchange, especially for travelers to Heathrow Airport, the barriers aim to guide those with luggage towards the lifts. Additionally, changes such as clearer signage on platforms have been made to enhance passenger navigation. This initiative is in response to an increase in escalator incidents since the Elizabeth line's launch in May 2022.

The barriers allow passengers to pass freely while directing those with luggage towards lifts, which were often ignored by travelers.
