Families oppose horrific' plan for Highgate cemetery toilet block
Briefly

Families with relatives buried in Highgate Cemetery are protesting against redevelopment plans that include a toilet block and gardener's hut, threatening to exhume remains. Bereaved family members, such as those of actor Tim Pigott-Smith, argue the facilities will disrupt the tranquility of the burial site. Some have already applied for exhumation licenses, citing emotional distress and loss of peace as primary concerns. The opposition highlights the need for respectful environments for mourning and reinforces the significance of cemeteries as sacred spaces for remembrance and reflection.
Grief is a very powerful emotion and needs peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings. This building is a disgrace and an insult to caring loved ones.
The toilet block would be two metres from my father's grave and would ruin the tranquility of an area of the cemetery known as the mound.
I am thinking of exhuming him. I'm planning to be buried there myself and I'm not prepared to be put behind a wall.
The project, which also includes the building of a new gardener's hut, has been described as horrific by bereaved family members.
