Transport for London (TfL) has revealed which Tube stations in south London could be upgraded soon. London Mayor Sadiq Khan wants 50 per cent of the stations on the London Underground to be step-free by 2030. At the moment, 93 Tube station are step-free, which means that a further 43 stations will need to be upgraded in the next five years for this target to be met.
Step-free access stations have lifts so that passengers do not have to use escalators or stairs to move between the street and the platform. In South London, plans are already being drawn up to make two Northern line stations step-free.
TfL says that it will have completed full feasibility studies for the upgrades to Colliers Wood and Tooting Broadway stations by the end of September. Freedom of Information (FoI) data has also revealed a longlist of 30 stations across the capital that could soon be earmarked for similar upgrades.
Only one station south of the river is on the longlist - East Putney on the District line. Here is a full list of the step-free access upgrades currently taking place, as well as those which are likely to take place in the coming years.
