Hornchurch car park redevelopment plans approved
Briefly

Havering Council approved a housing project at Dorrington Gardens, aiming to address a housing shortage by building one and two-bedroom flats and three-bedroom homes. The proposal faced over 40 objections from residents concerned about reduced parking and local infrastructure strain. The council argued the site was underused for parking, with only 17 bays utilized daily, and encouraged a shift away from driving. Despite critiques regarding the limited height of buildings and lack of affordable housing, the council proceeded with the plan to meet rising housing demand in the area.
Council officers argued any overspill would be negligible and the development would encourage residents to move away from driving.
Labour councillor Jane Keane said she understood why ward councillors were concerned about the loss of cars, but Hornchurch was well served by public transport.
The scheme received more than 40 objections from residents, who raised concerns about the potential strain it could put on local infrastructure.
None of the homes will be affordable aimed at low-to-moderate income households, which planning officers said was regrettable but acceptable.
