Trevor Gocan, aged 57, was convicted of manslaughter after fatally assaulting his 74-year-old neighbor, James O'Neill, over a dispute regarding a gate in Covent Garden. The attack, which occurred in broad daylight, left O'Neill with severe injuries including a traumatic brain injury that ultimately led to his death nearly two weeks later. Gocan, who claimed self-defense, was arrested soon after the incident and, following a jury trial, was found guilty, reaffirming the stance that such violence won't be tolerated in society. He is due for sentencing later in June 2024.
The killer acted disgracefully, punching and kicking his victim in full view of members of the public among them children on a busy Sunday morning. The jury's verdict shows that casual, thuggish violence will not be tolerated on London's streets.
A post-mortem examination found that Mr O'Neill's death was caused by complications from a traumatic brain injury and rib injuries resulting from the assault.
