Louis De Zoysa has lost his attempts to appeal both his conviction and life sentence for murdering Metropolitan Police sergeant Matt Ratana. The incident occurred at Croydon custody centre when De Zoysa shot the officer after smuggling in an antique gun during his arrest in September 2020. The Court of Appeal dismissed his barristers' claims that he was unfit to plead and that his sentence should be reconsidered, reiterating that all applications are denied. Sgt Ratana is remembered for his compassionate service and respect for others.
Dame Victoria Sharp, along with her colleagues, stated, "All applications will be refused, for reasons which we will give in writing," regarding De Zoysa's appeal.
Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley highlighted Sgt Ratana's outstanding character, noting, "He treated everyone with respect, with compassion and with good humour," in remembrance of the fallen officer.
